In Memoriam: Courtney Shives, Jr., 1943 - 2011
Courtney Shives, Jr., a longtime friend of the Nasher Museum, died on April 27, 2011, in Greenville, South Carolina. He was 68.
Shives graduated from Duke University in 1966; he supported and promoted the university his entire life. He served on the Nasher Museum Friends Board and on the Sarah P. Duke Gardens Advisory Board. He was an Iron Duke, a member of the Founder's Society, a Duke Reunion volunteer and Local Alumni Executive Committee member. An avid Duke basketball fan, Shives did not miss a single game at Cameron Indoor Stadium this past season.
"We are very sad to lose Courtney," said Kimerly Rorschach, the Mary D.B.T. and James H. Semans Director of the museum. "He loved art, good food and traveling. He was a long-time supporter, and was tremendously enthusiastic about the new Nasher Museum and its potential for the campus and community. He participated in all our key events, and cheered us through many milestones. We will miss him greatly."
After he graduated from Duke, Shives earned a master’s degree at the University of Colorado and a Ph.D. at the University of Oregon. He taught for several years at the University of Montana, Upper Iowa University and St. Cloud State University before moving back to Greenville. There, he found his calling developing and managing historic properties. In 2006, he bought a house in Durham to spend more time at Duke.
Courtney is survived by his devoted companion, Joyce Murphy; his brother, Fletcher Groce Shives; sister-in-law, Sue McCallister Shives; and their children, Alison Mozelle Shives and Ian McCallister Shives.
Read more about Shives’ life in The Greenville News.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Upstate Forever to support conservation of our special places, the V Foundation to fund cancer research, or the North Main Community Association to support the environmental and social viability of the community.
Condolences may be sent to the family through Thomas McAfee Funeral Home.
