Family Days take place on select Sundays from 12-4 PM. On these days families visiting the museum enjoy live entertainment, create hands-on projects and explore exhibitions with a gallery hunt. Made possible in part by Duke Medicine, Nordstrom and RBC Bank.

The Nasher Museum offers free teacher programs throughout the year.
TEACHER RESOURCES
The Education Department develops a number of materials for teachers to use with their students including background information about exhibitions, Pre-Visit and Post-Visit activities, images and lists of selected resources. Teachers who attend teacher programs or schedule a guided or self-guided tour receive folders with these materials. These materials are also available upon request. You can request materials by sending your mailing address to nashered@duke.edu or by calling 919.684.1169.

NASHER COMES TO YOUR CLASSROOM– FREE!
Open to all schools within a 25 mile radius of the Nasher Museum. A member of the Nasher education staff will visit your classroom to lead an engaging discussion with digital images from current and past exhibitions. This free program lasts 30-45 minutes and encourages critical thinking, careful looking, and thought provoking-discussion.
Nasher staff can provide a digital projector and laptop or use classroom equipment to present the PowerPoint slides. Classroom must have a screen or blank wall for projection.
A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words
Recommended for grades K-5
Available February 11 – May 31, 2013
Explore the relationship between pictures and storytelling. This visit reinforces the English Language Arts Common Core standards of “Key Ideas and Details” and “Integration of Knowledge and Ideas”.
The Art of Identity
Recommended for grades 6-12
Available February 11 – May 31, 2013
Consider issues of identity in portraiture as students explore how they present themselves and how they draw conclusions about others. Using our current exhibitions, students will identify and interpret visual details from a wide variety of images.
BUS SCHOLARSHIPS
Bus scholarships are available for a limited number of K-12 guided field trips to the museum. Please contact nashered@duke.edu, or call 919.684.1169, to find out if your school qualifies.
GUIDED TOURS STARTING FEBRUARY 12, 2013
Guided tours last 90 minutes for K-12 school groups and include a 20-minute hands-on art activity that relates to a theme or artwork from the tour. On their tour, students will discuss a total of 5-7 artworks in multiple exhibitions. Guided tours engage students in discussion about the artwork on view while encouraging critical thinking and the development of higher-order processing skills.
Double Exposure: Connecting Science and Art at the Duke Gardens and Nasher Museum
For 2nd Grade
Available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays only; February 19 - May 23, 2013
Students will sharpen observational skills, practice collecting data, discover connections between science and art, and engage in hands-on discovery as they visit both the Duke Gardens and Nasher Museum in a single day. Groups will spend 80 minutes at each venue, with a lunch break between their guided tours. This tour is FREE for all 2nd grade DPS groups. Double Exposure buses will be paid for by DPS. Storytelling is central to young children’s learning processes. This tour focuses on story and narrative in artwork to heighten observational and interpretive skills while having fun. The museum visit reinforces the English Language Arts Common Core standards of “Key Ideas and Details” and “Integration of Knowledge and Ideas”.
Reading Visual Text: Thinking Critically about Art
Recommended for grades K-12
Available February 22 – June 7, 2013
Students will engage in careful looking and thoughtful discussion of photography and other representational artwork. This tour focuses on the exhibition Light Sensitive: Photographic Works from North Carolina Collections and the museum’s permanent collection. Students will make reasoned interpretations about what they see and support their ideas with visual evidence.
Persuasive Visions
Recommended for grades 8-12
Available March 26 – June 7, 2013
Students will explore how artists construct meaning and create persuasive messages in a variety of media. Students will engage with all exhibitions on display, including the multi-media collages and installation art of Wangechi Mutu: A Fantastic Journey. Mutu’s artwork can be challenging. Teachers are encouraged to preview images online prior to scheduling a tour.
Nudity Disclaimer: The Nasher Museum of Art would like to make you aware that the following exhibitions contain some works that display the nude human figure: Light Sensitive: Photographic Works from North Carolina Collections and Wangechi Mutu: A Fantastic Journey. The museum realizes that teaching children about nudity can be a sensitive issue and a challenge. The artworks containing nudity will not be featured on our K-12 tours. However, they are visible in the galleries that students will be visiting. Our Education staff will be happy to answer any questions you may have about nudity in the galleries prior to your museum visit.
SELF-GUIDED TOURS
Self-guided groups or teacher-led school tours are permitted in all of our galleries. We highly recommend that educators preview exhibitions prior to the student visit to assure the content in each gallery is age appropriate.
Self-guided visits must be scheduled in advance.

PREPARING FOR YOUR SCHOOL TOUR
What to Expect during a Guided Tour at the Nasher Museum of Art
- Inquiry-based tour approach where students and Gallery Guide discuss artworks.
- Opportunity to practice critical thinking skills.
- Focused discussions on a selected group of about 6-10 works of art.
- All guided tours meet multiple North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Standards.
- Tours engage multiple learning styles.
Special Needs
Help us create an inclusive program. Please inform us in advance of any students with cognitive, emotional or physical disabilities in your group. We will do our best to adapt the program to best meet everyone's needs.
Class Size
Classes will tour the museum in groups of 10 -15 students. Usually we can accommodate a maximum of 60 students per tour time.
Chaperones for Guided Tours
--Grades K-5: 1 chaperone for every 5 students.
--Grades 6-8: 2 chaperones for every 15 students.
--Grades 9-12: 1 chaperone for every 15 students.
Chaperones for self-guided groups: We require 1 chaperone for every 5 students.
Lunch
K-12 school groups may eat lunch or snacks in the Community Classroom only if this space is reserved in advance. The Community Classroom seats a maximum of 32 people. Weather permitting, school groups may picnic on museum grounds in designated areas only. Outside food and drink are not permitted anywhere else in the museum or on museum grounds.
